Confusing Crisis with Creativity
Tuesday, March 14 2006 @ 09:05 PM EST
Contributed by: Dave Balter

I get the feeling some folks think I'm crazy for posting certain information for public discussion. While there are plenty of supporters, there are many who struggle with the notion, both outside of the company and inside the company.

A few days ago I tried to explain this to Aaron Cohen over IM, who believed my documentation of company events were sometimes attempts to create crisis:

AC: We're the vendor, at the client's whim. Maybe you're just trying to create a mini crisis to put on the blog?
DB: not at all
DB: everyone confuses creativity with crisis
AC: explain
DB: well
DB: we've been trained for so long about the way a business should operate
DB: the way information flows
DB: and how employees, outsiders, clients - everyone - is treated by that information
DB: the minute someone tries to adjust those boundaries
DB: it's called a crisis
AC: I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. But why not take down all the barriers?
AC: Why have a "MT" why not run the company with employee input?
DB: different - businesses are not communes nor socialist states
DB: they can't run like that
DB: meaning - there should always be input, but the business still needs clear direction
AC: Crisis or creativity
DB: oh jesus
AC: :-)
AC: I'm not saying let the company be run like "Survivor"
DB: ergh

Call me crazy...

The Production-Based Enviroment Systemic Dichotemy
Monday, March 13 2006 @ 09:39 PM EST
Contributed by: RobMango

My work here at BzzAgent has been with the Communications Developer team. Simply put, our work here is to respond to every BzzReport that comes through the system. Sunday the 12th was my last day of work, in a position that I have held since December 2004.

I'm leaving with mixed emotions.

Here's my viewpoint. I have seen how all ComDevs pass through this extremely social job here with BzzAgent, given the opportunity to connect with unique induviduals across the continent in a personal way - but instead of embracing this opportunity, the department is geared towards efficiency, which takes away any chance of building any rapport with anyone. And the rapport building is the thing that makes Bzzing fun for everyone, and it's what keeps Agents interested in being honest, and keeps people from burning out on both sides of the fence - the Agents, and the ComDevs.

So, why are we streamlining this department in a way that neglects the social fabric of BzzAgent?

That's my goodbye question. My time here has come to an end. I really enjoyed this job, and could see how dynamic technologies such as wikis, and more organized team efforts to connect with our Agents, could keep both Communication Developers and Agents from having such high turnover rates. It really matters: the way you build it declares how it will be used. The console of the Communication Developer system needs some love, and the team needs more means of interactivity.

I think BzzAgent needs to take the themes of the business books we have been Bzzing - The Ultimate Question, All Marketers Are Liars, and The Ice Cream Maker for example - and put quality in the forefront of our BzzAgent relations.

I wish BzzAgent the best of luck through its growing pains.

Sincerely,

BzzAgent RobMango
