Agent Reaction to Media Model
Friday, February 17 2006 @ 10:14 AM EST
Contributed by: Dave Balter

Martin Oetting of Germany called Buzz-O-Phone and wants to know, "how BzzAgents feel about our transition to a media model?"

You can hear the question yourself...it's the one Time-Stamped Feb 17, 07:35:11

There's lots of reasons for this change, but at the core is the philosophy that we can start providing more programs with a wider variety of experiences. But, what do you think?

Reference Checks
Wednesday, February 15 2006 @ 06:50 AM EST
Contributed by: Dave Balter

Been spending some time the last 5 business days on candidates to take over Inside Sales.

I'm always stunned by the reference check game, for two reasons.

  1. Since you're calling people who have been "prepped", you're just getting the same old answers - people trying to help their friend, co-worker, whatever, get a great job.
  2. Occasionally, you find a reference who completely trashes the candidate. Makes you wonder if the candidate doesn't know who their friends are - or if they have a limited barrel to pull from.
Either way, we have a big decision to make. Can you help? Here are the top two choices:

  • The Builder

This person has helped build two amazing sales teams. He's started at both orgs when they were small and helped grow one to over $200 million. He's been at his current position for a few years, and may feel as if he's gotten the ship stabilized - and wants his next challenge. The staff thinks he's great, are confident in him. But wonder if he's going to be too hard on the salesfolks, or if he's the right personality for us. He'll get the numbers, but at what cost? This guy also brings some "cache" to the biz through his network and previous accomplishments.

  • The Happy Guru

This candidate makes you smile. He's very upbeat, positive and really enthused by the process - and the return. As one reference said, "he's the guy that always says 'happy friday, but not in an annoying type of way'". He's built some amazing teams, but not directly in our industry, so that's a question. His preparation for the meetings with us has been stellar and his 'customer service' to this process has blown us away.

Third Wheel Update. Met a guy this morning who could be great here. Never count out the dark horse. With two strong candidates, we may want to be careful of giving ourselves too many options - every candidate takes about 20 hours of work from a variety of team members - but when do we stop looking?
